A refrigerant flow switching device (218) for alternatively conveying flow of refrigerant from either a high pressure (208) or a low pressure evaporator (224) to a compressor (202) of a refrigeration system and a refrigerator using such a refrigeration system. The device utilizes the pressure difference between the higher pressure refrigerant from the high pressure evaporator (208) and the lower pressure refrigerant from the low pressure evaporator (224) or atmospheric pressure to open and close a first flow controller (226) of the device positioned in a conduit (220) leading from the high pressure evaporator (208) to the compressor (202). The device further comprises a second flow controller (228), such as a check valve positioned in a conduit (230) leading the low pressure evaporator (224) to the compressor (202), which stays open only when the first flow controller (226) is closed. The first flow controller comprises a piston (259) which is expanded from a first position to a second position by the pressure of refrigerant from the high pressure evaporator (208) against a constant force provided by a compression spring (226), positioned against the piston (259). The piston attached through a torsion spring (262) to a gate (233) having an orifice (236) causes the gate orifice to snap open or close when the piston (259) expands or compresses respectively for either allowing or preventing flow of refrigerant from the high pressure evaporator (208) to the compressor (202).

Closed cell polyurethane foams, useful as thermal insulation for refrigerators and the like, are prepared by blending a polyisocyanate, a polyol and a suspension of at least one solid alkaline reagent, preferably sodium hydroxide, in an inert carrier liquid having a suitable viscosity. Preferred carrier liquids include polyepoxides and polyoxyalkylenediamines. The alkaline reagent reacts with and removes the carbon dioxide employed as a blowing agent, thus decreasing the thermal conductivity of the foam.
