A phosphor of high luminous intensity consists of an alkaline-earth metal sulfide which is activated with at least one element selected from the lanthanides, Mn, Cu, Ag, Pb and Au and is doped with phosphorus at a concentration in the range 100 p.p.m. to 10,000 p.p.m. and a halogen element. This phosphor when it contains Ba alone or both Ba and Mg at a concentration of 50 p.p.m. to 10,000 p.p.m. in the alkaline-earth metal sulfide has especially good luminous intensity.
