A communications system comprises a memory which is shared by a plurality of users, each one receiving and transmitting messages to each other. In the present system, a message is composed of a plurality of data buffers stored in the memory and each data buffer is controlled and mapped to a unique direct control block (DCB) which stores the characteristics of said data buffer. The chaining of the DCB forms the whole message which may be multicast to a plurality of users. Therefore, in order to improve the performance of such communications system, one may duplicate the message as many times as necessary without re-writing the data in the personal storage of each user by using an indirect control block (ICB) which represents the message duplicated. Each ICB stores the characteristics of the message duplicated and points to a DCB. A field in the DCB enables to count the number of duplication of the message. The DCB and ICB stores different fields which are required in order to perform the operations of lease control block from the free queues, the operations of message enqueue in the user queue, the operations of message dequeue from the user queue, and the operations of message release to the free queues. Two separate free queues FDCBQ and FICBQ chaining the free DCB and ICB are provided and are controlled by two control blocks FDQCB and FIQCB. The present apparatus and method may also be used for multicasting data buffer which composes a message by adding new fields in the ICB. In this case, the message to be multicast may have a content different from the original one, which requires therefore that to each ICB correspond a unique DCB.

A traffic control apparatus implemented in a virtual path ATM communication system comprising a plurality of hops interconnected by physical links which comprise virtual paths including a plurality of virtual channels. A connection between two hops is defined as the combination of a physical link, a virtual path, and a virtual channel. Said connections are shared between a reserved bandwidth service and a best effort service. ATM data cells conveyed on said best effort service are routed from hop to hop by analyzing their virtual connection identifier. This is done by managing a pool of free queues being able to store ATM data cells, each of said queues storing all the incoming ATM data cells having the same virtual channel identifier.

The invention discloses a method and an apparatus for implementing the physical interface in a network element connected to a packet networks such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network. With the solution of the invention the physical interface functions can be integrated on one chip for more than one network port. The physical interface is provided between port bit streams at media speed and word data flow transferred onto/from a bus which is under the control of the network equipement. The solution of the invention consists first in grouping logics and storage elements by islands of more than one port. Furthermore, the logics and storage elements for statistical counting operations can be grouped for a processing generalized to all ports. Finally, the solution of the present invention takes into account two characteristics of the physical interface which are the different rates between network link media speed and bus access rate and the technology of the high density static imbedded RAMS used for hardware integration. The Flip/Flop pointer RAMs of Flip/Flop data RAMs are duplicated and some interface RAMs are created to transfer control data between the islands and the generalized processing logical blocks.

A communication system comprises a plurality of hops interconnected by links comprising a plurality of connections. The traffic between the hops is shared between a reserved bandwidth service and a non reserved bandwidth service. The control of said non reserved bandwidth service comprises a hop by hop backpressure mechanism. When the traffic entering a hop exceeds a low/high threshold, the backpressure mechanism generates start/stop backpressure primitives in order to resume/throttle the entering traffic. In case of congestion the mechanism is either able to selectively stop the connection contributing to the congestion without affecting the rest of the link traffic, or to globally stop the whole link traffic.

The invention includes a bridge having n ports (n > 1), each port being connected to a Token-Ring physical segment, each physical segment having one native Token-Ring workstation attached, said bridge comprising means for emulating to the workstations a single Token-Ring logical segment with a single Active Monitor and a single Ring Number. The invention allows to replace a MAC-per-port by a centralized function inside a centralized processor; the frame handling function, due to the fixed and limited configuration (same bridge Active Monitor seen by all connected stations), does not require a multi-port bridge function, but a simpler switch function between ports. Bridge clocking is also simplified, and a cost effective UTP retiming solution is presented.

In one aspect, an apparatus for distributing network communications among multiple operating system partitions includes a physical port allowing communications between the network and the computer system, and logical ports associated with the physical port, where each logical port is associated with one of the operating system partitions. Each of the logical ports enables communication between a physical port and the associated operating system partition and allows configurability of network resources of the system. Other aspects include a logical switch for logical and physical ports, and packet queues for each connection and for each logical port.

The invention discloses a method and an apparatus for use in the packet networks and particularly Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks to support traffic of connections requiring a minimum bandwidth at connection establishment. The method and the apparatus further support any mixed traffic including connections requiring a minimum bandwidth, a fixed reserved bandwidth or no bandwidth at connection establishment. The invention consists in using a first scheduler triggered by absolute time for scheduling the Minimum Service connections up to a rate corresponding to their reserved minimum bandwidth reserved, a second scheduler and a queue of Minimum Service connection identiers for communication between the two scheduling schemes. With the dual scheduling mechanism of the invention the minimum bandwidth for connections reserving a minimum bandwidth at connection establishment is guaranteed in each point of the connection path and at any time, the level of fairness of the remaining bandwidth sharing depending on the quality of the second scheduler.

The invention includes a switch having N ports (N > 1), each port being connected to a Token-Ring physical segment, an additional port connected to an on-board processor, and a high-throughput port connected to a network of higher bandwidth than the Token Ring. The invention allows to route frames received at any one port to any or several ports, to begin the routing of the frames before they have been completely received at the input port, and to directly forward frames from input to output of the high badwidth port.
