Nails (14) suitable for outdoor use, such as roofing nails, are formed from carbon steel wire (10) pre-coated with a metallic layer (12), which has corrosion-resistant properties, such as a zinc layer applied by pre-galvanizing the wire. Each nail (14) is formed with a shank (18) and with a head (16). The metallic layer is discontinuous in a region (22) on the head (16) of each nail (14). The nails are collated by means of collating wires (24) welded to the shanks of the nails (14). The collated nails are coiled. The coiled nails are cleaned in a cleaning bath, such as 1,1,1,trichloroethane. The cleaned nails are coated with a polymeric layer, which covers the region (22) on the head (16) of each nail (14) where the metallic layer is discontinuous, thus restoring the corrosion-resistant properties of the nails (14).

The nosepiece (16) is for a fastener driving tool (10) which has a housing (12), a driver blade (14) within the housing for driving the fasteners and a power source for driving the driver blade. The nosepiece comprises, a trailing end (18) coupled to the housing (12), a substrate contacting end (20), a channel (22) for axially guiding the driver blade and the fastener toward the substrate. A slot (24) is proximate the substrate contacting end (20) with a curved ramp. The ramp is for interfering with the path of a prong of a fastener to bend it and hold the object. The method of holding the object comprises the steps of, providing a fastener positioning the object proximate to the substrate, driving the fastener so that the object is between the prongs of a fastener, bending the second prong toward the first prong, holding the object between the second prong and a bridge portion of the fastener so that the object is spaced from the substrate.
