A vertically-aligned LCD (100) is disclosed, which has improved contrast and display quality by reducing light leakage in the non-display area. Agglomerate particles (120) in direct contact with the liquid crystal (LC) layer (150) in the LC-cell are formed on an alignment layer (170) by selective irradiation of monomers present either in the alignment layer or in the LC layer. These particles are distributed more densely in the non-display area (B) than in the display area (A). The particles in the display area are formed under application of an electric field which aligns them in preferred directions (forming nano-protrusions), so as to provide ordering of the LC molecules there; however, no field is applied during the formation of the particles in the non-display area: these vary strongly in shape, size and orientation, preventing ordering of the LC layer and greatly reducing light leakage there.
