A method and system for providing control information for supporting high speed downlink and high speed uplink packet access are disclosed. A Node-B assigns at least one downlink control channel and at least one uplink control channel to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU). The downlink control channel and the uplink control channel are provided to carry control information for both the downlink and the uplink. Conventional control channels for downlink and uplink are combined into a reduced set of control channels for uplink and downlink. The Node-B and the WTRU communicate control information via the downlink control channel and the uplink control channel. The WTRU receives downlink data and transmits uplink data, and the Node-B receives uplink data and transmits downlink data based on the control information transmitted via the downlink control channel and the uplink control channel.

In a wireless communication system including at least one wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) and at least one Node-B (NB), an activation or deactivation state is determined for each of a plurality of HARQ processes. A signal that includes the activation or deactivation state for each of the HARQ processes is transmitted to the WTRD. In response to receiving the signal, the WTRU activates or deactivates a particular HARQ process in accordance with the activation or deactivation state for each of the HARQ processes contained in the received signal.

A wireless communication method and apparatus for transferring buffered enhanced uplink (EU) data from a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), i.e., a mobile station, to a Node-B. The EU data is generated and stored in a buffer of the WTRU. The WTRU transmits a message to the Node-B including a request for a desired transport format combination (TFC) or data traffic indicator. The Node-B schedules one or more allowed EU data transmissions between the WTRU and the Node-B by transmitting an EU data scheduling message to the WTRU. The WTRU transmits all of the EU data stored in the buffer to the Node-B if the allowed EU data transmissions are sufficient to support transmission of all of the EU data stored in the buffer. Otherwise, the WTRU transmits a portion of the EU data along with the desired TFC or detailed traffic volume measurement (TVM) information to the Node-B.

A method and apparatus for generating and processing a high speed downlink shared channel (HS-DSCH) medium access control (MAC-ehs) protocol data unit (PDU) are disclosed. MAC-ehs service data units (SDUs) are multiplexed based on a logical channel identity. Reordering PDUs are generated from the multiplexed MAC-ehs SDUs. A reordering PDU includes at least one MAC-ehs SDU and/or at least one MAC-ehs SDU segment. A MAC-ehs SDU is segmented on a priority class basis if a MAC-ehs SDU does not fit into a reordering PDU. A MAC-ehs PDU is generated including at least one reordering PDU. The MAC-ehs SDUs may be stored in priority queues before generating the reordering PDUs. Alternatively, the reordering PDUs may be generated from the multiplexed MAC-ehs SDUs. Alternatively, the received MAC-ehs SDUs may be buffered in a corresponding buffer for each logical channel before multiplexed based on a logical channel identity, or reordering PDUs are generated.

Either a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) performs timing adjustment with a target/second eNode-B using a random access channel (RACH) access procedure, and resets the radio link control (RLC) and the hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) after having received the handover command or the WTRU performs and sends measurement to a source eNode-B, receives a handover command from the source/first eNode-B, the handover command including an indication regarding a type of timing adjustment procedure to be used, wherein the indication regarding the type of timing adjustment indicates whether a dedicated Random Access Channel (RACH) preamble or a random RACH preamble is to be used for a random access procedure, and the WTRU performs handover to the target/second eNode-B using information included in the handover command.
