Disclosed is an apparatus and method for correcting for track misregistration when a slider or head assembly contains a separate read element (40) and write element (42). Basically, the offset is determined at a first position and at a second position of the actuator arm (48) assembly. From these offsets a constant and a multiplier are determined for determining an offset as a function of the cylinder location. Also disclosed is a method and apparatus for minimizing distance traveled to prevent misregistration when repositioning between the read element and a write element. The read element is intentionally offset from the write element at an angle so as to minimize the distance traveled across the disk.

Track following servo patterns are written to the disks 14 of a DASD unit after the unit has been completely assembled, using the DASD's voice coil motor and transducing head assembly 32, 34, 36, 37. Before assembling the DASD unit a servo reference surface is recorded on one of the disks. This reference surface contains the track following servo patterns and the clocking information that is required for subsequently recording servo patterns on the recording surfaces of all of the disks. After the DASD unit has been fully assembled, and sealed, its access motor and transducing head assembly is used to read the reference surface. Thereafter servo patterns are written to the remaining disks, again using the DASD's access motor and transducing head assembly. The servo reference surface may be recorded on one of the disks during full surface testing of the disks thereby eliminating the need to use a servo writer.

A data storage subsystem suitable for use in a data processing system is disclosed which comprises a number of separate physical housings (20,22,23,24), each housing having a number of disk supporting spindles (72) mounted therein. The velocity of rotation of the spindles within a housing is synchronized, and the rotational position of the spindles may be locked into a fixed relationship. When number N of disk supporting spindles are provided, spindle rotation is synchronized, and mirrored data files are written out of phase by 360/N degrees, thereby providing reduced latency time during a subsequent read operation, while at the same time providing data integrity through the use of redundant data files.

A sector servo seek control samples each sector to obtain sector time, the track identification within a sequence of track types and a position error signal (PES) for a track location to track location seek. The device during each sector determines the actual transducer track location and the next sector projected track location with respect to the sequence of track types. The projected track location is corrected using the error signal (PES) to find the actual location, but if a sector signal is missing or erroneous, the projected location is used as the actual location, permitting a composite correction to be made when a correct sector signal is obtained. The seek time is minimized by using maximum acceleration followed by maximum deceleration while not exceeding a velocity value that would cause the device to overshoot the target track using full deceleration.

A disk drive storage system comprises an array of disk drive units (230). The disk drives (160) contained in the units have a diameter of 65mm and rotate at 10,000 RPM which has the effect of reducing latency. In a preferred embodiment data and corresponding parity information are converted into portions and stored on a respective different one of the disk drive units. Data stored on a filed disk drive unit can be regenerated on a replacement disk drive unit. A disk drive unit can be replaced without powering down the system. Four disk drive units can be arranged in a four drive system to match the space geometry of the traditional half-high flexible disk drive used in a personal computer.
