A pultruded composite column (10, 110, 156) and beam (12, 130, 168) joint system is used in the construction of large structures and is particularly adapted for an electrical transmission tower because of the reduced EMF levels at ground level below the tower effected by the replacement of steel with composite members. The tower has corner legs or columns (10, 110, 156) which are interconnected and supported by a lattice structure of cross members (12, 130, 168). The columns (10, 110, 156) have one or more specialized longitudinal channels (14, 112, 158) spanning their lengths and the cross members (12, 130, 168) have specialized locking ends which lock into retaining structure defined in the column (10, 110, 156) channels (14, 112, 158), permitting cross member braces (12, 130, 168) to be inserted and locked in place at any selected point along the channel (14, 112, 158).
