L'invention se rapporte à un procédé et à un appareil qui permettent de remettre en circulation automatiquement l'électrolyte d'une batterie industrielle ou de toute autre batterie similaire. On utilise à cet effet un système d'aspiration par le vide qui extrait l'électrolyte d'un élément primaire (12) de la batterie (10), le transfère vers un emplacement central où il peut être traité et le renvoie ensuite dans la batterie pour son utilisation ultérieure. L'invention propose de nombreuses formes de traitements de l'électrolyte, tels que réglage de la température, filtrage, et élimination des gaz excédentaires. Un tel procédé peut être immédiatement utilisé sur virtuellement toutes les batteries industrielles, en n'engendrant qu'un minimum de modifications et d'efforts, et il permet de réduire considérablement le temps et le coût d'entretien de ces batteries, tout en augmentant leurs possibilités d'adaptation et leurs utilisations.

57 An automatic shutoff device is of the type which makes use of a venturi to terminate the flow of a liquid into a container when the liquid in the container reaches the level of a discharge tube. A movable housing (18) is operatively positioned downstream of a constrictive nozzle (16) giving rise to the venturi and a consequent low pressure area; the movable housing (18) substantially encompasses the low pressure area except that the downstream end of the housing (18) is open and serves as a discharge tube from which liquid flows into the container to be filled. The filling operation will continue until such time as the level of the liquid reaches the level of the discharge tube at which time liquid is rapidly drawn into the low pressure area causing the housing (18) to move in the downstream direction thereby overcoming the restoring force of an associated spring biased valve (20) causing the valve to seat to thereby substantially terminate the flow of liquid.

A method and device for filling a container (12) with liquid up to a predetermined level (14). The device includes a cylinder (18) and a piston (34) movable within the cylinder (18) between a rest position and a fill position. A supply of liquid (28) for filling the containe (12) is provided to a first end (40) of the piston (34) at alternating pressures to cycle the piston (34) back and forth between the rest and fill positions. Each time the piston (34) reaches its fill position, supply liquid is added to the container (12). With each cycle the device draws fluid from the container (12) and then attemps to compress the drawn fluid with a second end (44) of the piston (34). When the fluid drawn is gas, the piston (34) can compress the gas to continue moving to the fill position. When the drawn fluid is liquid, the piston (34) can not compress the liquid and thus is stopped to prevent further filling.
