A method and apparatus for renewing software in a software-controlled machine is provided wherein a sensor (16) detects external command information to shift an operation control circuit (50) from an operating mode to a renewal mode, and then detects external operating data on software to store same from the sensor (16) in a program memory (53) of the renewal mode for easy renewal of the software in accordance with renewal control program. Then, the operation control circuit (50) is shifted from the renewal mode to the operating mode to operate the machine with the renewed operating data.

[Solution to Problem] The optical sensor for bill validation comprises a reflection type optical device (13, 30) that has a housing (41) for receiving an optical component (40) and also forming a part of a bill passageway (20). The optical component (40) is unitized and assembled integrally with the housing (41) that comprises a lid (42) formed of light-permeable materials and a casing (43) in combination with the lid (42) to define an inner chamber (49) to contain and arrange the optical component (40) therein.

A device is provided for continuously and concentrically transporting documents of different width through a passageway at a high speed. The device comprises a pair of opposed rollers 131 rotatably mounted on the opposite sides of a passageway 11 to grasp the opposite sides of a bill 70 between rotators 131, 132. At the moment of grasp between rollers 131, a central line C of bill 70 is automatically brought into alignment with a central line G of front passageway 11, and at the same time, bill 70 is grasped by opposed rollers 131 rotating in the adverse directions each other so that rotational force of rollers 131 applied to bill 70 serves to flip bill 70 to the rear of passageway 11.
