An apparatus for optically detecting a security thread (2) embedded in a paper-like material (1), e.g., a paper currency (P). The paper-like material (1) is carried through a detection region defined by an infrared radiation source (3) and two infrared radiation detectors (6; 7). Two optical filters (4, 5) are mounted on the detectors (6; 7), respectively. Those filters (4; 5) have different infrared transmission characteristics. Therefore, one detector (6) can detect infrared rays having wavelengths only within a specific range determined by that one filter (4), and the other detector (7) can detect infrared rays having wavelengths only within another specific range determined by the other filter (5). When the infrared radiation source (3) projects infrared rays to the paper-like material (1), the detectors (6; 7) deliver the respective detection signals. A discriminator (10) processes these detection signals to discriminate wherether or not a security thread (2) is embedded in the paper-like material (1) and also what a detected security material (1) is made of.

In a printed matter identifying apparatus of the present invention, the light source (2) illuminates the detecting fields (3, 3') of the note (1). The reflected light-waves from the detecting fields (3, 3') are lead to the light receivers (10, 11, 10', 11') through the focusing lenses (4, 4'), the diffusion plates (5, 5'), the optical slits (6, 6'), the light conducting paths (7, 7') and red color transmitting and blue color transmitting filters (8, 9, 8', 9'). The output signals from the light receivers (10, 11, 10', 11') are amplified by the amplifiers (12, 13, 12', 13') and sampled by the sampling circuits (14,15,16,17). Among the sampled color component signals, the red component signals are applied to the subtracter (20) to produce the red component difference signal and the blue component signals are applied to the adder (21) to produce the blue component sum signal. These different signal and sum signal are applied to the comparators (27, 28) respectively and compared with the reference signals read out from the memory (24). The output signals from the comparators (27, 28) are supplied to the judgment circuit (29) where the judgement of the printed matter is performed.

A currency note identification system comprises a line sensor (14) generating a scanning signal corresponding to the printed pattern on a currency note, an adder (42) for summing picture element signals in the scanning signal from the line sensor (14) for each scanning line, and a detecting circuit (45) for detecting the leading and trailing edges of a printed section of the currency note from the sum signal output of the adder (42). Printed pattern data for printed patterns at predetermined positions with respect to the leading and trailing edges detected by the detecting circuit are detected, and the similarity of the detected pattern data to standard pattern data is calculated by a calculator (51). The kind and/or genuineness of the currency note is determined from the similarity obtained from the calculator (51).
