A process for producing L-phenylalanine at high rates of formation and in good yields is provided which comprises allowing a microorganism which belongs to the genus Nocardia and Is capable of producing L-phenylalanine from phenylpyruvic acid or a salt thereof and an amino group donor to act upon an aqueous solution containing phenylpyruvic acid or a salt thereof and an amino group donor selected from the group consisting of ammonium salts and ammonia in a hydrogen gas atmosphere.

A novel process for the production of an L-phenylalanine lower alkyl ester in a good yield and at a high production rate is provided which comprises permitting a microorganism which belongs to the genus Nocardia and is capable of producing an L-phenylalanine lower alkyl ester from the corresponding lower alkyl ester of phenylpyruvic acid and an amino group donor to act on a lower alkyl ester of phenylpyruvic acid and an amino group donor in the presence of hydrogen, water and an organic solvent.
