A flat battery comprising a battery case doubling as one electrode terminal, a sealing plate doubling as the other electrode terminal and consisting of a planar center portion projecting toward an outer face side and planar peripheral edges extending almost in parallel with the center portion, and a gasket insulating the case from the sealing plate and sealing a power generating element, characterized in that the peripheral edges of the sealing plate are bent at further outer peripheral edges, or the case has folding portions to be fitted to the peripheral edges of the sealing plate via the gasket, the folding portions partially compressing the gasket. The flat battery, with such an improved sealing plate and/or improved case shape, is excellent in electrolyte leakage resistance and mass-productivity despite its thin structure.

From a metallic sheet having a circular hole (10) and laminated with a resin film (9) for a gasket, a circular sheet concentric with the circular hole (10) and larger than the circular hole is stamped. The circular sheet is then drawn into a bottomed cylinder. The cylinder is used as a case (1) with a gasket. A generating device (20) and a sealing plate (2) are placed in the case (1). The edge (2a) of the sealing plate (2) is caulked by the edge (1a) of the case (1) through the gasket (3) made of the resin and the case is sealed to produce a coin-shaped cell.

A sealing material for electrochemical elements which comprises a rubber ingredient and a tackifier and keeps the electrochemical elements in a highly sealed state in a wide temperature range, wherein the rubber ingredient comprises at least either of butyl rubber and polyisobutylene rubber and the tackifier comprises at least one member selected from the group consisting of terpene resins, aliphatic petroleum resins, and alicyclic petroleum resins.
