A rechargeable negative pole for an electrochemical apparatus using a non-aqueous electrolyte is made of an alloy consisting essentially of one element selected from the group of Sn, Pb, In and Bi, with Zn or Zn and Cd. A rechargeable electrochemical apparatus is provided with a combination of this negative pole and a positive pole, and can be reversibly charged. When immersed in a non-aqueous electrolyte containing alkali metal ions, the negative pole reversibly occludes and emits the alkali metal ions by this charge and discharge. The negative pole has a long charge-and-discharge life, since however many times the charge and discharge is repeated, the negative pole is not fragmented, and the negative pole maintains its electrode configuration stably. In addition, since the amount of alkali metal occluded per unit volume is large, the energy density is high.

An organic electrolyte battery employs copper oxide as the active substance for the anode, and lithium or an alloy mainly containing lithium as the active substance for the cathode, has a large energy and an interchangeability with standard batteries, but has the problem that the voltage drops at the start of discharging. This organic electrolyte battery has chalcopyrite mixed as an active substance into the copper oxide, to eliminate this problem, and enable the use of the battery as a power source of a precision electronic device such as an electronic watch. According to this battery, the discharge efficiency of the copper oxide itself can also be improved.

This alloy cathode is incorporated in an electrochemical device in combination with lithium connected to be conductive with the alloy, and an electrolyte is added thereto to occlude lithium in or on the alloy cathode in the device. This process enables one to avoid cracking of the cathode.

The electrode systems (13, 14, 15) consisting mainly of carbon on an insulated substrate (12), and the surfaces of said electrode systems are coated with an insulating layer (16) while parts (13', 14', 15') thereof being exposed. A porous member (18), which retains oxygen and electron receptors thereon, and a retainer frame (17) are then provided on the upper surface of the resultant product. A cover (19) having an opening with the diameter smaller than that of the porous member (18) is then placed on the resultant product, and all of these parts are combined integrally. Owing to such a construction, an inexpensive disposable biosensor capable of carrying out a measuring operation easily can be obtained. When heat-treated at 60-170oC for 1-8 hours during the formation of the electrode systems, the preservation stability of the biosensor can be improved. By subjecting the surfaces of the measuring electrodes to a protein adsorption treatment, the dispersion of response currents can be prevented.
