Thus, a liquid crystal display element that has improved display characteristics, response, and the like can be obtained. Methods of producing such liquid crystal display elements and such an optically anisotropic film are provided. The production methods are simply carried out utilizing the irradiation of polarized light. Thus, the present invention is of great value to industry.

A liquid crystal display having a high transition speed in which bend alignment is formed easily upon application of a voltage of several volts by subjecting an alignment film, which can impart liquid crystal molecules with a pretilt angle of 15-90°, to parallel alignment. A transflective liquid crystal display device having excellent display quality is provided which is capable of precisely controlling the alignment of liquid crystal molecules and of providing a high brightness display both in a transmissive display mode and in a reflective display mode. The transflective liquid crystal display panel has a pair of substrates, a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the substrates, pixel electrodes disposed on the surface of one of the substrates facing the liquid crystal layer, a counter electrode disposed on the surface of the other substrate facing the liquid crystal layer, and an alignment film covering the surface of each of the substrates facing the liquid crystal layer. The pixel electrodes, each including an electrode for reflective display and an electrode for transmissive display, are disposed such that the distances to the other substrate from the electrode for reflective display and from the electrode for transmissive display are different. Liquid crystal molecules at the liquid crystal layer surface facing the electrode for reflective display in a region above the electrode for reflective display (reflective display region) are aligned in the same direction as liquid crystal molecules in a region above the electrode for transmissive display (transmissive display region) that are in the same plane as the molecules in the reflective display region, the plane being parallel to the principal surfaces of the substrates.

In a display device according to a first aspect of the invention, luminance is not made substantially uniform over the entire display screen but rather imparted a luminance gradient such that luminance substantially monotonously decreases from the center of the screen towards the peripheral portion using a luminance gradient forming means, whereby power consumption is reduced compared to cases in which the entire screen shows substantially uniform luminance. In a second aspect of the invention, by optimizing gray level characteristics and thereby improving a viewer's impression of brightness, luminance gradient is made even less perceivable without increasing power consumption. These configurations provide large screen, low power consumption display devices.

In a liquid crystal display element particularly that having a mode wherein the display operation is performed by controlling the amount of birefringence of the liquid crystal layer, such as an OCB type liquid crystal display element, the contrast is improved. This is achieved by the following: the reflection of light that occurs inside the element is reduced, the reflected light resulting from the difference in the refractive indices between materials for the boundary surfaces of the portions inside the element is reduced, and the internal light, such as light from the backlight, is directed toward the direction orthogonal to the surfaces of the substrates. More specifically, a light absorbing material may be used in portions of a black matrix, active elements, and wirings formed on at least one of the substrates.
