Each terminal includes a single device or a composite device essentially consisting of a plurality of devices. Transmission and reception of messages to and from the plurality of terminals on the communication network is performed using an address system assigned to each terminal. The address system comprises a device address or DA (131) assigned to the individual terminals, a subdevice address or SDA (132) assigned to respective devices constituting each terminal and having a single or a plurality of values SDA, and a function address or FA (133) assigned to respective functions possessed by each device and having a single or a plurality of values of FA, whereby even when a terminal to be controlled is a composite device, only a function desired to be controlled can readily be controlled and extensibility of the system can be improved to facilitate control processing in the system through communication.

The present invention relates to a communication method allowing an exclusive control between control sections by providing a communication procedure and a logical communication channel determined by the communication procedure. According to the first method of this invention, each electronic device (4, 5, 6) connected to a common signal transmission line (1) has means for establishing a secondary logical communication channel (2.1-2.4) between control sections (10-16) connected to the corresponding communication sections (7-9) of two electronic devices between which a primary logical communication channel (2, 3) has been established, thereby realizing an exclusive control at the level of control sections of the electronic devices connected to opposite ends of the established primary logical communication channel. According to the second method of this invention, there are provided, in the control section, means for establishing only the secondary logical communication channel (2.5-2.7) between control sections connected to the corresponding communication channel, and the communication procedure. Accordingly, under the condition that one or some of a plurality of control sections within a first electronic device is connected to another control section of a second electronic device, a control section of a third electronic device is allowed to communicate with a control section except the one or some of the control sections within the first electronic device occupied by the control section of the second electronic device.
