Z¹, Z², Z³, Z⁴, Z⁵, Z⁶, Z⁷, Z⁸, Z⁹, Z¹⁰, Z¹¹, and Z¹² each represent a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a methyl group or a methoxy group; Z¹ and Z², Z⁴ and Z⁵, Z⁷ and Z⁸, or Z¹⁰ and Z¹¹ may be connected to each other to form an aliphatic, aromatic or nitrogen-containing aromatic ring; and n and m each represent 0, 1 or 2

The dichroic dyes (I) and (II) exhibit excellent dichroism and can be prepared from 2,2'-ditrifluoromethylbenzidine having no toxicity, such as mutagenicity.
