An optical interface including a keyway (20) formed in a printed circuit board (16,17) and a mating portion (22) attached to the ends of a plurality of optical fibers (28). Openings (24) in a surface (25) of the keyway (20) communicate light from the fibers (28) to semiconductor chips (14) on the board (16,17) by means of optical waveguides formed in the dielectric layers (17) of the printed circuit board (16,17). The keyway (20) accurately aligns the mating portion (22) which aligns the ends of the fibers (28) with the openings (24).

A method of coupling an optical fiber (20) to a desired optical input (15) (e.g. an integrated optical waveguide) wherein the optical fiber (20) is pre-coated with a magnetic material (21) and then placed in an elongated groove (12) in a base (10), one end of which groove (12) terminates at the desired optical input (15). A magnetic field is applied to hold the pre-coated optical fiber (20) firmly in place while it is permanently mounted by some means such as soldering or an adhesive.
