A gas sensor having a simple structure and capable of accurately measuring the combustible gas component concentration of a measurement gas such as an exhaust gas despite variations in the oxygen concentration of the exhaust gas and variations in element temperature. The gas sensor 1 has the following constituent features: (1) first processing space 9: a measurement gas is introduced thereinto via a first gas passage 11; (2) second processing space 10: a gas contained in the first processing space 9 is introduced thereinto via a second gas passage 13; (3) oxygen concentration detection element 4: adapted to measure the oxygen concentration of a gas contained in the first processing space 9; (4) oxygen pumping element 3: adapted to reduce the oxygen concentration of the measurement gas introduced into the first processing space 9 within a range such that water vapor contained in the measurement gas is not substantially decomposed; (5) oxidation catalyst section 16: adapted to accelerate combustion of a combustible gas component contained in a gas introduced into the second processing space 10; and (6) combustible gas component concentration detection element 5: a constant voltage is applied thereto, and element 5 has an output current which varies according to the amount of oxygen consumed by combustion of a combustible gas component contained in the gas introduced into the second processing space 10 from the first processing space, to thereby provide information regarding the concentration of the combustible gas component of the measurement gas based on the output current.

The plug cap includes an electrical connection member capable of making an electrical connection between the spark plug and the high-tension cord, a resin molded member covering at least part of an outer circumferential surface of the electrical connection member and a cover member covering at least an outer circumferential surface of the resin molded member and formed of an elastic rubber material softer than a resin material of the resin molded member. The resin molded member has a protruding portion radially outwardly extending in at least one direction. The cover member covers the protruding portion of the resin molded member in such a manner that at least part of the protruding portion is engaged with a cap mounting portion of the engine via the cover member.

An ignition coil 100 includes a coil section 10―which in turn includes a coil case 15, a primary coil 12 and a secondary coil 14 accommodated within the coil case 15, and an insulating molded layer 16 filling the coil case 15―and a coil core C including a center core section 20 and a yoke section 30. The ignition coil 100 is mounted on an engine body EB such that the coil core C is insulated from the engine body EB, by means of a mounting section 70. The mounting section 70, together with an insulating filling section 60 filling at least partially a gap S formed between the coil section 10 and the coil core C, which face each other, is integrally formed of a polymeric material through integral injection molding. That is, the ignition coil 100 is mounted on the engine body EB by means of the mounting section 70, which, together with the insulating filling section 60 filling the gap S formed between the coil section 10 and the coil core C, which face each other, is integrally formed of a polymeric material through integral injection molding. Consequently there is disclosed an ignition coil of excellent durability and reliability that is capable of suppressing occurrence of leakage between a secondary coil and a coil core and suppressing generation of corona discharge across a gap between a coil section and the coil core to thereby suppress erosion of, for example, a coil case, which accommodates the primary and secondary coils, even when the maximum-voltage generation capability of the secondary coil is enhanced as a result of, for example, increase in discharge voltage of a spark plug, and the ignition coil is operated continuously for a long period of time, as well as to provide an ignition unit using the ignition coil.

The present invention provides an apparatus for measuring the concentration of a constituent to be detected in exhaust gas, which apparatus is capable of detecting with a high accuracy the concentration of the constituent to be detected in exhaust gas even though oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas varies. In an exhaust gas sensor 1 for use in the measuring apparatus, exhaust gas is introduced into spaces 15, 16 on both sides of an oxygen concentration cell element 4, and the oxidation catalyst activities of first to third electrodes 11 to 13 are adjusted so that there occurs a difference between the space 15 and the space 16 in the consumption of the constituent to be detected, which consumption is caused by the oxidation of the constituent. Thus a concentration cell electromotive force is generated in the oxygen concentration cell element 4, and an oxygen pump element 3 pumps oxygen into or out of the space 15 so that the electromotive force is held at an target value EC not more than 10 mV. The pump current at this time is taken as the detection output on the constituent to be detected. The strengths of the oxygen concentration cell element 4 and of the oxygen pump element 3 can be increased by the provision of an integrated sintered body in which the elements 4 and 3 are laminated together with the space 15 formed between the first electrode 11 and the second electrode 12. Besides, the accuracy of detecting the constituent to be detected can be improved by the control over the temperature of the oxygen concentration cell element 4 and by the temperature compensation to the pump current.
