An information recording and reproducing system has a front panel (32) with a horizontally extending card receiving slot (33). An optical memory card including a data storage region can be inserted into the slot (33). An optical head in the apparatus can record and reproduce data into and out of the data storage region of the card. Due to a small distance between the underside of the apparatus case and the slot (33) the operator's hand holding the card may contact the mounting surface, to which the apparatus is mounted. Therefore, it is difficult to insert the card into the slot (33). To solve this problem, the lower edge of the slot (33) has a card receiver (34) adjoining thereof, un upper surface (35) of the card receiver (34) is flush with the lower edge surface of the slot (33) and the card receiver (34) projects forward from the front panel (32).

A main guide rail (4) and the auxiliary guide rail (5) are spaced in the same plane. The axis of the auxiliary guide rail (5) is oblique at a predetermined very small angle to the axis of the main guide rail (4). The auxiliary bearing (23) has a bearing bore having a slot-shaped cross section. Portions of the bearing surface of the bearing bore which are in contact with the auxiliary guide rail (5) are displaced transversely to the direction of the stroke of the card carriage (6) during the stroke.
