The fluoride glass core is doped with rare earth metal ions, and part of the fluorine in the fluoride glass is substituted by at least one halogen. Pr 3+ , Pr 3+ -Yb 3+ -Nd 3+ , or Pr 3+ -Er 3+ can be doped as the rare earth metal ions. Chlorine, bromine or iodine may be used as the halogen.

the dispersion medium compensates for dispersion of wavelengths by a value of chromatic dispersion that takes a plus or negative number opposite to a value of chromatic dispersion for the optical amplification medium. In the figure, an optical signal enters from the left and exits from the right of the optical amplifier. Input signal light passes through optical isolator 201a and then, combined with excitation light from excitation light source 202, through optical coupler 203. Then the combined signal light passes into optical fiber 205 for optical amplification after passing through a dispersion medium 204.
