A mounting arrangement for a handset, neckset and the like having a transmit and a receive end. A regular-shaped cavity is provided at the transmit end for receiving a higher order microphone capsule, having two or more poles. The capsule is symmetrically fixed with the geometrical center substantially corresponding with the geometrical center of the cavity. The transversal size of the capsule is less or equal to the depth of the cavity. In this way, the capsule is embedded into the cavity, and the cavity is covered with an acoustically transparent screen. There is space left between the poles of the microphone and the facing walls of the cavity for fooling the microphone that it is in free space.

A hands free communications device (10) is disclosed which does not require the head of a user to support the device and where a loudspeaker is not required to be affixed either in or on the ear of the user. Various arrangements of the hands free communications device are disclosed, some of which incorporate multipole loudspeakers (20, 22) which further provides the user with degrees of privacy similar to those he may expect when using conventional head supported devices. Users of the hands free communications device (10) are able to wear the device for longer durations than head and ear supported devices and as well for those users who are in the public view, the device may be worn in a less conspicuous fashion. Various multipole loudspeakers for use with communication devices are also disclosed.

A wireless terminal for personal communication systems is provided with selective handsfree or handset receive mode of operation utilizing a single transducer. The transducer is mounted within a specially designed enclosure having front and back chambers each with strategically located acoustic ports for shaping the frequency response and providing good quality audio in each mode. Electronic equalization may be employed to further adjust the amplifier gain and shape the frequency response for dual mode operation.
