Disclosed is a fusing apparatus (5) for heat fixing toner images onto a receiver medium (15), the apparatus including:
a fuser member (30) including an elastomeric contact surface; a pressure member (50) positioned adjacent the fuser member thereby forming a fusing nip (35) there between to receive the receiver medium; a heater member (10) including a conformable base cushion layer (26) and an outer polymeric layer (28) disposed over the base cushion layer, the heater member being in contact with the fuser and external thereto; and a radiant heat subsystem (10) positioned externally of the heater member to provide heat to the surface of the first heater member which then contacts the fuser member so as to transfer heat thereto. The heater member is adapted to controllably exert pressure on the fuser member in order to controllably transfer heat to the fuser member, thereby providing control over the fusing capabilities of an eletrophotographic process, such as gloss, dwell, and thermal droop.

Es ist ein Luftströmungssystem (50) vorhanden, das einen Lüfter (52) umfasst sowie eine Verteilerkammer (56a), die in Strömungsverbindung zwischen dem Lüfter (52) und dem Heizelement (46) steht. In der zur Transportbahn (P) benachbarten Kammeröffnung ist ein Aufprallelement (60) angeordnet. Eine Aufprallkammer (58) steht in Strömungsverbindung zwischen dem Heizelement (46) und dem Aufprallelement (60), während ein Rückführweg (62) in Strömungsverbindung mit der Öffnung und dem Lüfter (52) steht.
