Apparatus for contacting solid particles with a liquid in a vessel having an agitator within a vertical draft tube, for instance for dissolving phosphate rock particles in acid, is characterised by means for supplying fluid under pressure to a bottom portion of the vessel to prevent solids settling and to resuspend solids that have settled, e.g. after shutdown. Apparatus for similar purposes is disclosed having a vent for minimising foaming. Also disclosed is a method of start up a continuous phorphoric acid production process in a multi-vessel system comprising four vessels (2), (16), (28) and (48).

Apparatus which is especially suitable for use in production of phosphoric acid comprises a closed vessel (16) including a draft tube (20) mounted vertically within the vessel. A feed slurry is introduced via an inlet (12) which is provided with a vent pipe (5) for venting gases from the vessel during reaction therein, thereby reducing foaming and preventing blockage of the inlet. The vessel may form part of a multi vessel system for production of phosphoric acid.

A starting procedure for the production of phosphoric acid in a multi vessel system comprises filling at least two communicating vessels (16, 28) with phosphoric acid, adding phosphate rock to a third vessel (2) that communicates with one (16) of the two vessels and adding sulphuric acid to the second (28) of the two vessels. Fluid is passed from the two vessels to a fourth vessel (48) as the volume of fluid increases by reaction and the generation of foam, and fluid from the fourth vessel is passed to the third vessel. Fluid is also circulated from the first to the second of the two vessels. Part of the contents of the second of the two vessels is removed and separated into phosphoric acid and calcium sulphate, part of the phosphoric acid being returned to the third vessel.
