The image taking system of the invention applies tone transformation processing to an image signal of an image taken through taking means (lens system 100, aperture 101 and CCD 102) while taking a taking situation into account. In the first embodiment, the image taking system comprises a taking situation assessment portion (108) adapted to make an assessment of a taking situation for the image, an amount-of-information change portion (107) adapted to change the amount of information of said image signal depending on the taking situation assessed at said taking situation assessment portion (108), and a tone transformation portion (110) adapted to implement tone transformation processing depending on tone transformation characteristics obtained using the image signal with the amount of information changed at the amount-of-information change portion (107).
