    摘要： A mailing machine is disclosed having an elongate feed deck, means for feeding envelopes along the feed deck, and a postage meter mounted in the mailing machine and having a printing mechanism disposed in juxtaposition with the feed deck so as to print postage indicia on successive envelopes as they are fed along the feed deck. The mailing machine includes a tape feeding and cutting apparatus mounted above the feed deck and adjacent to the postage meter on the side thereof opposite to the direction of feed of envelopes along the feed deck for feeding successive finite lengths of tape to the postage meter for printing of postage indicia on a portion thereof and for cutting and ejecting the printed portion of the finite length of tape from the mailing machine. The tape feeding and cutting apparatus is constructed and arranged so that all of the tape storing, feeding, severing and ejecting mechanisms of the apparatus are all positioned entirely one one side of the postage meter.

    摘要： In a device for processing documents being transported therethrough along a document feed path, an aligner apparatus (31) comprising: first and second guide walls (33,35), each guide wall positioned parallel to the document feed path and facing the other guide wall forming an alley along the document feed path in which the documents are relieved of interdocument forces allowing bottom edge alignment of the documents with the document feed path, the guide walls (33,35) forming a plurality of openings, each opening in the first guide wall being in alignment with an opening in the second guide wall; and a trap assembly (100) comprising first and second trap levers (101,103), each trap lever mounted along the document feed path on a side of the guide wall opposite the document feed path, each trap lever received by one of the plurality of openings in the guide walls and each trap lever opposing the other trap lever and positioned to, when actuated, cause opposing forces on one-another in order to grab the documents as they move along the feed path in the aligner apparatus (31) so as to control the gap between the documents, The trap lever configured with a resilient pad and an air gap to reduce noise when the lever is actuated and contacts the document.

    摘要： A postage meter 10 is insertable into and removable from a receptacle in a mailing machine base. The postage meter includes a shutter bar 26 which is slidably mounted to the meter. The shutter bar is positionable between a first position where the shutter bar is located opposite and blocking external access to an indicia plate 150 of the meter and a second position wherein the shutter bar is positioned laterally of the indicia plate. The receptacle is pivotally connected to mailing machine base and includes a shutter bar locking mechanism 28 for engaging the shutter bar in the shutter bar's first position and for slidably shifting the shutter bar between the first and the second position. A brush assembly 101 is mounted to the shutter bar for brushing or sweeping the indicia plate upon reciprocal displacement of the shutter bar between the first and second positions.

    摘要： The present invention is directed to, in a general aspect, a nudger for a mixed mail feeder (1) and, in particular, to an apparatus and method of providing and detecting proper position in a stack of mixed mail (5). The apparatus, generally, comprises a nudger arm (39) for detecting proper positioning of the mailpiece and a lean detection arm for detecting proper lean of the mailpiece with respect to the nudger. The method comprises generally, a determination that when the lean detection arm and the nudger arm are in a position indicating that the lead mailpiece is in the proper position, the stack of mixed mail is decelerated and fed to, for example, a separator, for further processing. The deceleration is performed at a slow rate and provides for a predetermined amount of over travel by the stack of mixed mail (5). This ensures proper contact of the lead mailpiece with the nudger rollers for feeding the mailpieces for further processing. The nudger rollers continue to feed the lead mailpieces until one or both of the lean detection arm and the nudger arm (39) move out of the position(s) for proper mailpiece feeding.
