An operating unit with an automatic tool changing device comprises a tool holding device having a clutch element for the mandrel. An expanding ring driven by a slider provides latching and unlatching operations for the tool holder with respect to the mandrel. With respect to prior operating units, the inventive operating unit provides the advantage of a less size, the mechanical strength of the tool holders being the same. Moreover, the use of a single mandrel, which is common to all of the tool holder devices, provides an operating unit which is much more simple and unexpensive than prior operating units.

A device for controlling the locking and unlocking operations of a gear wheel-rotary disc assembly comprises a ball for circulating screw having one end thereof coupled to a rotating coupling member. The screw is in turn rotatably engaged in a fixed ring-nut, which is housed in the bed of the device, to allow the screw to be axially driven, under the control of a driving motor. With respect to prior like devices, the inventive device allows the rotary disc to be driven quicker and more accurately from a locking position to an unlocking position thereof.
