The polishing arm (38) includes a motor housing (50) at a distal end (56) of the polishing arm (38). The tool head (42) includes a belt tensioner (98) and a roller (100). The belt tensioner (98) includes a tool extension (106) including the roller (100). The tool head (42) is configured to retain an abrasive belt (44) extending between the motor (40) and the roller (100). The belt sensor (45) includes a proximity sensor (148) and a lateral tab (146). The proximity sensor (148) is disposed at the motor housing (50). The lateral tab (146) disposed at the tool extension (106). The proximity sensor (148) is configured to measure a distance between the proximity sensor (148) and the lateral tab (146) and generate a proximity sensor signal. The controller (14) is configured to cause the processor (140) to identify an installation configuration for the abrasive belt (44) by comparing the measured distance to a distance threshold value.

The belt tensioner (98) is configured to bias the tip end (96) outward from the inner end (94) along the lengthwise axis (92). The tool head (42) is configured to retain an abrasive belt (44) extending between the rotatable shaft (88) and the roller (100). The controller (14) is configured to measure a usage of the abrasive belt (44) for polishing one or more workpieces (1000) and compare the measured usage to a threshold usage value to identify an end-of-life condition is present or absent for the abrasive belt (44).

The controller (14) includes a processor (140) in communication with a non-transitory memory storing instructions, which instructions when executed by the processor (140), cause the processor (140) to identify a cleaning requirement for the tool head (42) and control the robotic polishing assembly (12) to clean the tool head by moving the tool head (42) to engage the belt cleaning assembly (17).

The first zones (88A; 90A) are distributed circumferentially about an axis (22) of the bladed rotor (20) in a first array. The second zones (88B-F; 90B-F) are distributed circumferentially about the axis (22) of the bladed rotor (20) in a second array. The method further includes controlling the robotic polishing device (46), at a controller (48), to polish the second zones (88B-F; 90B-F) using the robotic polishing device (46) based on a second operating parameter. The second operating parameter for the robotic polishing device (56) is different than the first operating parameter.
