In one scheme, a mobile station registers (e.g., at R-level) with a network entity (e.g., a base station) each time it enters a new registration zone, which can correspond to an R-TMSI zone defined by GSM MC-MAP. The mobile station maintains a timer for each zone with which it has already registered but has since left. If the mobile station leaves a particular zone for a period longer than a time-out period, the registration with that zone times out, and the mobile station re-registers with that zone whenever it re-enters the zone. The mobile station may implement zone-based, timer-based, implicit, traffic channel RR, and some other registrations, or a combination thereof. Parameters to facilitate registration may be defined by a base station.

The radio link manager (22) provides the threshold and ratio uniformly to all base stations (14, 16, 18, 20) to provide a uniform operating point for all base stations (14, 16, 18, 20) in the system, thus, increasing capacity. The same centralized power control is easily expanded to provide a mechanism for intersystem soft handoff.

    摘要: A novel and improved method for performing paging is described. In one embodiment of the invention a searcher is used to detect spread spectrum signals. Samples received RF signals are stored in a sample buffer. During standby mode, the samples are gathered during paging slots assigned to the mobile. A set of searches are performed on the samples, and if pilot signals are detected additional demodulation is performed to detect paging messages. The resulting set of demodulation data may be combined to increase detection. After a page message has been detected, additional demodulation resources may be activated to processes more complete page messages, or other information channels. In one embodiment of the invention, the searcher includes a demodulator to perform quick page detection without the use of finger elements to reduce idle mode power consumption.

    摘要: The transmitted power of a mobile telephone is established by power control bits that are transmitted in a traffic channel from a base station and that are demodulated by a rake receiver in the telephone. The rake receiver includes a plurality of demodulators that demodulate respective fingers of the traffic channel which may be caused by multipath conditions, with the power control bits from each demodulator being combined with the power control bits of the other demodulators in the rake receiver regardless of whether the demodulators are in lock with their respective fingers. The combined power control signal from a rake receiver associated with a first base station is then tested against a threshold. If the combined power is at least equal to the threshold, the combined power control signal is sent to a logic combiner. If other base stations are communicating with the mobile telephone, the combined power control signal from each of these other base stations is also sent to the logic combiner. If any power control signal commands the mobile telephone to decrease its transmitted power, it does so; otherwise, it increases its transmitted power. Alternatively, the power control bits from each demodulator in a rake receiver can be blocked if the finger energy falls below a threshold that depends on the number of fingers from the associated base station.

    摘要: A method of and apparatus for scheduling data transmissions in a communication network comprising at least one cell (2a to 2g) and at least one scheduled user (6a to 6e) improves utilization of the reverse link and decreases the transmission delay in data communication. The apparatus comprises a controller (92) for collecting status information for said communication network and for scheduling data transmissions from said at least one cell (2a to 2g) to said at least one scheduled user (6a to 6e). The timing signals enable said controller to perform scheduling of data transmission. Each remote station is assigned a maximum unscheduled transmission rate for the duration of the communication with a cell. A maximum scheduled transmission rate can be assigned by a channel scheduler (12) for scheduled transmission of data traffic at high rates. The maximum scheduled transmission rate is assigned in accordance with a set of system goals, a list of system constraints, and collected information on the status of the communication network. Data is partitioned in data frames and transmitted over the reverse link at or below the maximum scheduled transmission rate which have been assigned to the scheduled user.
