摘要: A self-locating star wheel system (10) for spacing bottles on a conveyor (71) in a packaging machine comprising a pair of star wheels (12, 14) with a hub (16) and cam (13) disposed between them and mounted on an arm (80) which moves them into the stream of bottles until the cam (13) engages a pair of rollers (32, 34) mounted at the ends of a U-shaped pivoting bracket (36) attached to the machine frame to control the lateral position of the star wheels (12, 14) with respect to the stream of bottles. The cam diameter is specific for a given size star wheel (12, 14) so that the proper positioning of the star wheel (12, 14) is achieved by the geometric relationship between the star wheel (12, 14) and the cam (13). The mechanism also functions as a safety feature by sending a stop signal to the machine when something, such as a down bottle (62), causes the star wheel (12, 14) to move away from the rollers (12, 14).

摘要: An overhead assembly (20) has carrier assemblies (22) for picking up cartons (13), opening the cartons, and lowering the cartons onto groups of articles (15). Each carrier assembly has a pair of opening members (30) with protruding fingers (32) for insertion within cut-outs formed in the cartons. After a carrier assembly has engaged a carton in an inverted-T configuration, one of the opening members in the carrier assembly (22) is moved away from the other opening member, thereby opening the carton. Each carrier assembly has cam followers which travel within three cam plates (60, 62, 66). One cam follower (38) is for controlling an orientation of the carrier assembly, one cam follower (41) is for supporting the carrier assembly, and one cam follower (56) is for opening and closing the opening members. The overhead assembly (20) is substantially located on only one side of the path of the articles (15) and of the cartons and thus provides easy access.

摘要: A rotary flap tucker (10) comprising a tube sector having a smalleer arc length end, a larger arc length end, a longitudinal edge (12), and an edge which helically advances generally from the small arc length end to the large arc length end. The tube sector has end plates (30, 40) each with an edge contoured to avoid contact with a carton flap as the flap tucker rotates about its center axis which is aligned with the carton travel direction. The leading edge (66) of a flap (64) entering the flap tucker follows the helical edge of the flap tucker as it rotates without contacting the flap for a majority of the rotation. Rotation brings the flap tucker's longitudinal edge (12) in contact with the flap along a majority of the flap's length. Continued rotation plows the majority of the length of the flap simultaneously, thereby preventing the flap from misaligning on the carton when the flap is closed. The outside surface of the rotating flap tucker runs against the closed flap of the advancing carton, preferably along the carton's center line.
