Disclosed is a method for packing powdery or granular bulk material. In order to reduce packaging material the volume of packed bulk goods (1) is compacted in order to obtain a pressed part (2), whereby the enclosed air escapes and individual particles bond to each other. The pressed part (2) is introduced into a wrapper, such as a bag (3) which is then closed. The pressed part can have a cuboid, cylindrical, spherical or any other shape. It can present peripheral notches (9), subdividing it into several parts. The pressed part is pressed in the packaging on both sides so that particle bonding is destroyed.

The invention concerns a device for the volumetric measurement of the amount of bulk material in a protective atmosphere which ha s several metering chambers (23) on a gradually turned distributing plate (17) which are closed at the bottom by a stationary end plate (18) except for on the pouring station (4). To displace th e air in the metering chambers (23) nozzles are fitted in the end plate (18) through which protective gas is directed from below into the metering chambers (23). A cover plate which rests on the distributing plate (17) outside the filling area prevents air from penetrating the empty metering chambers and a protective gas supply nozzle (42) on the pouring station (4) stops air being sucked into the emptying metering chambers (23).

To keep the opening pressure of the relief valve (10) low and simplify the manufacture of the tool for the valve aperture (15), the valve aperture (15) is made of two intersecting circular holes (28, 29) extending preferably along the adhesive-free central region (19) of the valve diaphragm (12).

The vibration is used both to take a tube (15) without friction over the shaping shoulder (11) and the shaping pipe (12) and to compact the filling.
