An aqueous composition suitable for use, when dry, as an improved coating is provided including an aqueous emulsion polymer, the polymer having a glass transition temperature (Tg) from greater than 20 °C to 80 °C, formed by the free radical polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated nonionic acrylic monomer and 0-7.5%, by weight based on the total weight of the polymer, ethylenically unsaturated acid monomer in the presence of 0.01-1.0%, by weight based on the total weight of the polymer, t-alkyl hydroperoxide, t-alkyl peroxide, or t-alkyl perester wherein the t-alkyl group includes at least 5 Carbon atoms and, optionally, at least one other oxidant. A method of preparing the emulsion polymer, a method for providing a coated substrate wherein the coating contains the emulsion polymer having a Tg from -20 °C to 80 °C, and a method for improving the scrub resistance of a coating by including the emulsion polymer having a Tg from -20 °C to 80 °C are also provided.

Disclosed herein are core-shell polymers having an alkali-insoluble, emulsion polymer core and an alkali-soluble, emulsion polymer shell physically or chemically attached or associated with said core so that upon dissolving said shell with alkali, a portion of said shell remains attached or associated with said core. Also disclosed are compositions wherein said shell polymer has been neutralized and substatially, but not totally, dissolved so as to form a blend of neutralized core-shell polymer and an aqueous solution of neutralized shell polymer. The polymers are useful in applications such as inks, floor polishes, leather treatment, cement formulations, coatings, stains and varnishes and as a seed for further emulsion polymerization.

The porous polymer films are formed between 0° and 80° C, retain porosity at elevated temperatures and are non-friable. Also provided are methods for forming improved coatings, polymeric dispersions, and polymeric composites, which include PNPs. The PNPs have polymerized units of at least one multi-ethylenically-unsaturated monomer have a mean diameter of from 1 to 50 nanometers. PNPs having polymerized units of at least one multi-ethylenically-unsaturated monomer and at least one surface-active monomer are also provided.

An aqueous-based, UV radiation-curable coating composition containing a latex polymer emulsion and a multifunctional (meth)acrylate, wherein the latex polymer is selected to be greater than about 47 mole % acrylate and to have a glass transition temperature less than about 28°C is described. The selection of composition and glass transition temperature yields a UV-curable coating with superior direct impact properties which are useful for wood coating applications.
