Abstract: An angle of attack sensor includes a mounting plate (68); a vane (12) supported from the mounting plate and extending from a first side of the mounting plate, wherein the vane is rotatable about a vane axis; a housing (36) extending from a second side of the mounting plate in a direction opposite to the vane; a resolver (64) coupled to the vane; and an electronics module (72) mounted within the housing, the electronics module comprising: at least one processor (88); a communication device (92); and computer-readable memory (90), encoded with instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the electronics module to: receive, from the resolver, a signal indicative of an angular position of the vane about the vane axis; compare the signal to a first damage criterion; and output, using the communication device, a first fault signal to a consuming system of an aircraft that is indicative of a damage event based on a comparison of the signal to the first damage criterion..

Abstract: A method of monitoring an ice protection system (10) of a rotorcraft or an aircraft includes applying heat to rotating blades of the rotorcraft or the aircraft according to a heater duty cycle and determining an anticipated ice shed time for ice to shed from the rotating blades. Torque of the rotating blades is sensed, and an actual ice shed time for ice to shed from the rotating blades is determined based on the sensed torque. A status of the ice protection system (10) is determined based on the anticipated ice shed time and the actual ice shed time, and the status of the ice protection system (10) is output for consumption by a consuming system (70).

Abstract: An angle of attack sensor includes a rotatable vane (12) away and support from a mounting plate (68), a housing (36) extending way from an opposite side of the mounting plate, and a sensor (10) coupled to the vane. The angle of attack sensor communicates with an electronics module enclosed within the housing or mounted remotely with respect to the angle of attack sensor. The electronics module (72) includes a processor (88), computer-readable memory (90), and a communication device (92). The computer-readable memory is encoded with instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the electronics module to perform steps of a damage detection method.

Abstract: Apparatus and associated methods relate to determining altitude of an aircraft during flight based on properties of vortex shedding. A vortex-shedding projection (14) is projected into the airstream adjacent to the exterior surface of the aircraft so as to cause vortex-shedding turbulence (36) of the airstream. One or more downstream sound-pressure detectors (16A - 16G), which are attached to the exterior surface of the aircraft downstream from the vortex-shedding projection, detect(s) a vortex-shedding frequency f of the vortex-shedding turbulence caused by the vortex-shedding projection. A processor (18) determines the altitude of the aircraft based, at least in part, on the vortex-shedding frequency f of the vortex-shedding turbulence as detected by the one or more downstream sound-pressure detectors.

Abstract: An air data system (100) with a digital interface (103)includes least one air data component (102a-q), a receiving system (104a-c) and at least one digital connection (106). The at least one digital connection is between the receiving system and the air data component. A method (200) for transmitting data in an air data system with a digital interface includes measuring (202) at least one air data parameter with at least one air data component. The method includes generating (204) a digital signal representative of the at least one air data parameter with the at least one air data component, sending (206) the digital signal to a receiving system, and processing (208) the at least one air data parameter with the receiving system.

Abstract: A system includes a probe (14; 314), a transducer (16; 316), and a sealing feature (40). The probe (14) is detachable and includes a first gas path (24) extending from a head (20) to a mount. The transducer (16; 316) is configured to mate with the mount and includes a second gas path (36) with an inlet (38) configured to be in fluid communication with the outlet (28) of the first gas path (24) when the transducer (16; 316) is mated with the mount and at least one sensor disposed along the second gas path (36). The sealing feature (40) includes a first membrane (366) configured to allow pressure to be conveyed from the first gas path (24) to the second gas path (36) when the transducer (16; 316) is mated with the mount while preventing contaminants from entering the second gas path (36) when the transducer is distant from the probe (14).

Abstract: A device (10) for use in a leak check test of an air data system (12) includes a device body (14), an opening (18) extending into the device body (14) with the opening (18) being configured to allow a probe (22) to be at least partially inserted into the opening (18), and walls (16) surrounding the opening (18) with the walls (16) being situated to seal a port (24) in the probe (22) such that air is prevented from flowing into or out of the port (24) while the probe (22) is inserted into the opening (18). A method of performing a leak check test includes covering the port (24) with the device (10) to seal the port (24), heating air within a gas path in the air data system (12), measuring the change in pressure of the air resulting from an increase in temperature of the air, and determining whether the air data system (12) is sealed depending on the change in pressure of the air.
