The mould (6) for aluminothermic welding of metal rails (2) has two components (19, 22) made of identical rigid refractory material and suitable for fitting around two ends (3) of rails to be welded, each component comprising: a lower part having a face (21) defining a mould cavity (25) suitable for enveloping the foot (8) and a core (12) of the ends of said rails, and a channel (38) opening at the bottom into a lower region of the mould cavity and having at the top an opening (39) and an upper part comprising a cooling chamber (32) connected to the mould cavity and capable of containing the heads (14) of said rail ends, the cooling chamber forming a non-compartmentalized volume to which the channel (38) is connected via the opening (39) and which is bounded by an external wall (27) of each mould component.

The invention concerns a mold for aluminothermal welding of railway tracks. The refractory coating (58) used for sealing the molding cavity (25) against liquid-phase welding metal leakage extends continuously from one to the other of the surface portions (52) defining spans supporting the parts (19) of the mold on the rails (2) to be welded, and delimits itself the molding cavity (25), thereby providing better continuity between the weld seam and the rails (2) and a better surface condition of the weld seam, as well as enhancement of preheating performance.
