The write pulse generating apparatus which generates a write pulse appropriate to an optical recording medium by controlling a light emitting device via a light emitting device driving unit so that a desired write pulse is generated, the write pulse generating apparatus including a control unit which provides information on the type of the optical recording medium and information on the recording speed factor; and a control signal generating unit which determines the type of a multi pulse which is to be generated in a multi pulse interval based on the information on the type and recording speed factor of the optical recording medium which is provided by the control unit, and generates a signal for controlling the light emitting device driving unit so that a write pulse having the determined multi pulse type is generated from the light emitting device. Also, the write pulse generating apparatus includes a control unit which sets the level of the write pulse for the entire interval or for a partial interval of a write mark and/or a write space of the optical recording medium according to the type of the optical recording medium and a recording speed factor; and a control signal generating unit which is controlled by the control unit and generates a control signal for changing the level of the write pulse for each interval of a write mark and/or a write space, and sends the control signal to the light emitting device driving unit. According to the apparatus and method, in an optical drive, compatibility with optical recording media of a variety of types and a variety of recording speeds is improved so that quality recording can be provided for any optical recording medium and any recording speed factor.

Provided is a laser diode driver for driving a laser diode in an optical recording/reproducing apparatus, and more particularly, a laser diode driver having an auto laser power control (APC) function, an optical pickup device and an optical recording/reproducing apparatus using the laser diode driver. The laser diode driver includes a multiplexer (408), a pulse generator (404), a differential amplifier (422), and an adder (414). The multiplexer selectively outputs drive potentials, such as a peak power drive potential, a bias power drive potential, a read power drive potential, and the like, corresponding to power levels of a laser signal in response to a select signal applied to the multiflexer (408). The pulse generator (404) generates the select signal applied to the multiplexer (408). The differential amplifier (422) calculates a difference between a monitor signal provided from a monitor diode for monitoring the laser signal output from the laser diode and a drive potential selected by the multiplexer (408). The adder (414) adds an output of the differential amplifier (422) and an output of the multiplexer (408) and outputs a signal for driving the laser diode. The laser diode driver itself performs the APC function, and thus can prevent malfunction caused by electromagnetic interference.

The auto laser diode power controlling apparatus for controlling the output of a laser diode by comparing the current power level of an optical signal output by the LD with a reference power level and controlling the output of the LD according to the comparison result comprises a photo detector (PD) (214) for monitoring the current power level of the optical signal output by the LD, a sampler/holder (202) for sampling and holding the current power level output from the PD, a sampling and holding control signal generator (208) for generating a sampling and holding control signal for controlling the sampling operation of the sampler/holder (202) on the basis of a non return to zero inverted (NRZI) signal, and an operator (204) for comparing the current power level sampled by the sampler/holder with the reference power level and controlling the output of the LD according to the difference value. It is possible to improve recording and reproducing performance since rapid change in an optical output is appropriately controlled using different loops according to the kind and state of the disc.
