Azetidine compounds of general formula or an acid addition salt thereof, wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or an acyl group; R 1 to R 6 are hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or other groups; and Z is a carboxyl group or a derivative thereof, have useful properties by rendering the anthers of plants sterile. By cross-pollination F 1 hybrid seed may thus be prepared. The compounds may be prepared by hydrolysis/alcoholysis of the corresponding nitrile compounds, which are also novel.

A process for preparing 1-substituted azetidin-3-ol derivatives of formula: or an acid halide thereof, in which R' is an aryl methyl group; and R 2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group, which comprises
(a) reacting an epoxy halide of formula: in which Hal is a halogen atom, with a primary amine of formula:
(b) cyclising the resulting addition product of formula: in an aqueous medium to form the acid halide of the compound of formula 1, and (c) when the free hydroxy compound of formula I is required, treating said acid halide with a base.
The compounds are intermediates e.g. for the preparation of azetidine-3-carboxylic acid derivatives which exhibit plant growth regulant properties.
