A building in which electromagnetic shielding members are used in a body (3) of the building and at openings such as windows, entrances and exits to provide the overall building with electromagnetic shielding is disclosed. A window glass (4) and a window frame (5) are each provided with an electromagnetic shielding body (1) formed so as to be electrically integrated with a grounded or earthed connection of a building structure. This enables the window openings to be provided with an electromagnetic shielding effect through simple construction work, virtually irrespective of the structure, shape and material of the window opening. Further, an earth bond is obtained between a sash frame (5) and steel reinforcing rods (22) in the reinforced concrete of the building body (3). This makes it possible ground the sash frame (5) in a simple manner without exposing it, and to obtain an electromagnetic shielding effect, merely by providing the earth bond between the reinforcing rods (22) and sash frame (5) before the concrete is poured.

In a building (1) constructed so that its structure and apertures form an electromagnetic screening to prevent leakage of radio communications from within the building, any defect in the screening is detected by a system consisting of a mobile radio wave detector (4) with an antenna (5) positioned on the ground outside the building and another detector (2) with an antenna (3) mounted, e.g. on a gondola, so as to be movable along the outside of the building (1) past each floor thereof. A transmitter (11, Fig. 3) on each floor transmits a specific frequency for that floor, or the same frequency at a different time for each floor, and any signal of relatively high intensity is detected outside by the detectors (2,4), and the signals may be amplified, processed and recorded by the equipment of Fig. 3. The deterioration of the shielding is detected by comparison with past results.

All or a portion of the periphery of a building is constituted by an electromagnetic shielding structure to form an electromagnetically shielded space within the building. This is done by constructing the body (1) of the building of ferrite or mesh-containing concrete, or by constructing the external wall of the building of PC panels containing an embedded mesh or of curtain walls consisting of an electromagnetic shielding material and fixed to the body of the building by anchor bolts through the intermediary of metal fasteners. Sets of communications equipment within the building communicate with one another by way of electric waves. Since the space within the building is electromagnetically shielded from the outside, any desired electric wave frequency band can be selected for the communication of information among the sets of communications equipment.

An electromagnetic shield-type doorway or entrance for a building is provided with two doors (2, 3) having an effectively curved passageway between them. By lengthening the passageway to such an extent that the two doors (2,3) cannot be opened simultaneously, electric waves can be blocked at either of the doors (2,3). The electromagnetic shielding effect can be enhanced by installing a revolving door (10) in the passageway and attaching electrically conductive brushes (13) to at least the lower edge and one side edge of the revolving door to fill the gaps (12) at these edges. In a system for electromagnetically shielding a building, a doorway passage of the building is partitioned by three or more doorways (A, B, C) each having an electromagnetic shielding function. When persons leaving and exiting a building simultaneously approach entrance and exit doors (A, C) at the ends of the doorway passageway so that these doors (A,C) open at the same time, the central doorway (B) remains closed to maintain the integrity of the electromagnetic shield. If a large number persons are entering and exiting, the doors (A,B,C) are opened and closed in an interlocked manner so that one of the three doorways (A,B,C) will always be closed, thereby maintaining the intergrity of the shield in reliable fashion without hampering entry and exit.
