摘要:
A fastener applying tool driven by air in a driving stroke and a return stroke featuring noise and recoil reduction and increased efficiency, driving force, and speed of operation. Air directed into the main cylinder to force the main piston through its driving stroke is stored in a chamber to rapidly return the main piston. Air compressed by the main piston at one end of the main cylinder is used to form an air cushion to keep the main piston from striking the bottom of the cylinder. The main piston cycles within a slidably mounted main cylinder. Pressurization of one end of the main cylinder during the driving stroke repositions the main cylinder to close the main valve to shut off high pressure air from the main piston and open a valve to vent the air above the piston to atmosphere. Upward movement of the cylinder and rapid return of the piston significantly reduces the recoil force normally experienced in such a tool. A valve assembly coaxially located at the opposite end of the main cylinder functions to admit and exhaust air to pressurize and vents the piston and main cylinder respectively. Noise suppression is achieved by an elastomeric cap. Rapid acting components reduce air wastage and improve overall tool efficiency.

A self-starting portable tool comprises a cylinder (104) in a housing (102), a piston (130) being mounted in said cylinder (104), means (164) for igniting and exploding a mixture of fuel and air in a combustion chamber (120) to drive said piston (130) to operate a working member (132), return means for causing said piston (130) to move upwardly from a lowermost position to an uppermost position of rest including outlet means (156) in said cylinder (104) between its ends. Thereby, a portion of combustion gases is forced to exhaust from said combustion chamber (120) to ambient atmosphere and a reduction in temperature of the combustion gases remaining in the combustion chamber (120) is caused. Said return means further include bumper means for initially moving said piston (130) upwardly from said lowermost position, said combustion chamber (120) above said upper face (130A) of said piston (130) being out of communication with ambient atmosphere during the further return of said piston (130) which return is substantially caused by producing an upwardly acting pressure differential on the upper and lower faces (130A, 130B) of said piston (130) induced by the reduction in temperature of the combustion gases above the upper piston face (130A).

An efficient, portable, easy to operate fastener applying tool (10) is disclosed that is powered by the gases produced from the internal combustion of a fuel and air mixture. A supply of liquified gas stored under pressure in a cylinder (12) provides the source of power. A piston (28) connected to a fastener driver (30) is slidably mounted within a cylinder (12) to move reciprocally downwardly and upwardly through a driving and a return stroke. A combustion chamber (21) is formed at the upper end of the cylinder (12). A compression chamber is formed at the lower end of the cylinder (12). A spark plug (63) powered by a piezo-electric firing device (77) is located within the combustion chamber (21). The combustion chamber (21) features a set of fan blades (51) driven by an electric motor (61) which is continuously in operation when the tool (10) is in use. A main valve mechanism (37) actuated by a set of lifting rods (42a, 42c) which are moved upwardly and downwardly when the tool (10) is moved toward and away from the workpiece, is used to control the flow of fresh air through the combustion chamber (21). When the combustion chamber (21) is isolated from the atmosphere and the fuel and air are thoroughly mixed, the spark plug (63) is fired to explode the fuel and air mixture and force the piston (28) through its driving stroke. Air compressed by the lower end of the piston (28) at the lower end of the cylinder (12) is used to form an air bumper to keep the piston (28) from striking the bottom of the cylinder (12). An exhaust valve (68) is mounted at the side of the cylinder (12) to discharge combustion gases at the end of the driving stroke. The rapid discharge of combustion gases at the end of the driving stroke produces a thermal vacuum within the combustion chamber (21). Additional air supplied to the lower face (35) of the piston (28) from the atmosphere forces the piston (28) through its return stroke. A simple but reliable interlock mechanism (75) is used to insure the safe operation and sequencing of the various components of the tool (10). The unique use of the electric fan (22) improves the overall operation of the tool (10) and the utilization of the liquified combustible gas. It also insures that the piston (28) is forced through its return stroke by atmospheric pressure alone.

An efficient, portable, easy to operate fastener applying tool (410) is disclosed that is powered by the gases produced from the internal combustion of a fuel and air mixture. A supply of liquified gas stored under pressure in a cylinder (424) provides the source of power. A piston (430) connected to a fastener driver (420) is slidably mounted within a cylinder (429) to move reciprocally downwardly and upwardly through a driving and a return stroke. A combustion chamber (439) is formed at the upper end of the cylinder. A spark plug (463) powered by a piezo-electric firing device (477), is located within the combustion chamber (439). The combustion chamber (439) features a set of fan blades (432) driven by an electric motor which is continuously in operation when the tool is in use. A main valve mechanism (434) actuated by a set of lifting rods (460) which are moved upwardly and downwardly when the tool is moved toward and away from the workpiece, is used to control the flow of fresh air through the combustion chamber (439). When the combustion chamber (439) is isolated from the atmosphere and the fuel and air are thoroughly mixed, the spark plug (463) is fired to explode the fuel and air mixture and force the piston (430) through its driving stroke. A bumper is located at the lower end of the cylinder (429) to keep the piston (430) from striking the bottom of the cylinder. Combustion gases are discharged from the cylinder at the end of the driving stroke which aids in producing a thermal vacuum within the combustion chamber. Air supplied to the lower face of the piston from the atmosphere forces the piston through its return stroke. A unique trigger interlock mechanism (476, 480) is provided to insure that the tool cannot be operated until the combustion chamber (439) is closed and the combustion chamber cannot be reopened after ignition until the trigger (476) is released.

An efficient, portable, easy to operate tool employing a linear motor (130) is disclosed that is powered by the gases produced from the internal combustion of a fuel and air mixture. A supply of liquified gas stored under pressure in a cylinder (104) provides the source of power. The linear motor (130) is slidably mounted within a cylinder (104) to move reciprocally downwardly and upwardly through a driving and return stroke. A combustion chamber (120) is formed at the upper end of the cylinder (104). A spark plug (164) powered by a piezo-electric firing device (182) is located within the combustion chamber (30). The combustion chamber (120) features a turbulence generator, such as a fan (122), driven by an electric motor (122) which is continuously in operation when the tool is in use. A main valve mechanism (136) actuated by a set of lifting rods (144A, 144B) that are moved upwardly and downwardly when the tool is moved towards and away from the workpiece, is used to control the opening and closing of the combustion chamber (120) and to control the flow of fresh airthrough the combustion chamber (120). When the combustion chamber (120) is isolated from the atmosphere and the fuel and air are thoroughly mixed, the spark plug (164) is fired to explode the fuel and air mixture and force the linear motor (130) through its driving stroke. The linear motor (130) is returned to its driving position by a spring (148) or air acting against the underside of the linear motor (130). The unique use of the electric fan (122) improves the overall operational efficiency of the tool and the utilization of the liquified combustible gas.
