The transmitter electrode (3) has an arched top which is curved in the direction of transport (X) of the fiber material (1) and which has a trough-shaped sliding surface. An AC generator (5) is connected between the transmitter electrode (3) and the shielding electrode (4) and the measuring electrode (2) is connected to an evaluation electronic system (8).

The sensor unit comprises a measuring electrode (18) extending in the transport direction (x) of the fiber material (1), a transmitting electrode (21) disposed opposite of the measuring electrode (18) at a distance thereto, and a shield electrode (19). An alternating current generator is connected between the transmitting electrode (21) and the shield electrode (19), while the measuring electrode (18) is connected to an evaluation electronics system. According to the invention, the transmitting electrode (21) is provided with a projection (26) protruding in a raised manner in the direction of a sliding surface of the measuring electrode (18).
