The compounds have a high herbicidal activity against various weeds in soil treatment and foliage treatment in plough fields as well as in treatment under flooded conditions in paddy fields. Furthermore they exhibit a high selectivity to the undesired weeds as compared with the desired crops, so that they can be used in various applications as active ingredients for herbicides.

Compounds of the present invention are represented by the formula, wherein X represents a lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower haloalkyl or lower haloalkoxy group or a halogen atom, and R¹ and R², which may be the same or different, represent a hydrogen atom or a methyl group. They are useful intermediates for preparing herbicidal compounds of the formula which compounds are obtained by dehydrating the corresponding compounds (I) with any of a certain number of acids. The compounds (I) are prepared by reaction of an aldehyde with an acetoacetic acid salt in the presence of a C₁₋₆ carboxylic acid salt.

There is disclosed a novel isothiazolone derivative of the formula:
wherein X¹ and X² are the same or different and are independently hydrogen, chlorine or bromine; and R is haloalkoxy. The isothiazolone derivative is effective as a microbicide. Also disclosed are a microbicidal composition containing the isothiazolone derivative as an active ingredient, and an intermediate compound for use in the production of the isothiazolone derivative.
