摘要: A portable scanning head emits and receives light from a light-emitting diode to read symbols, such as bar-code symbols. The optics within the scanner are operative for focusing a light beam and the view of a light sensor in different planes exteriorly of a scanner housing. Imaging means are provided in the unit for imaging a viewing window. The viewing window has an area smaller than that of the scan spot. The system can employ an LED as a light source and tolerate the relatively large-sized (on the order of millimeters) scan spot without sacrificing reading performance since the photodiode "sees" only that portion of the scan spot visible through the viewing window.

摘要: An optical scanning system is provided for producing a signal representative of a spatial distribution of indicia having different degrees of reflectivity to light, such as a bar code (14).
The invention further relates to a method of reading an indicia where the electrical signal representative of the indicia is selectively sampled, the samples being analyzed to establish whether they will represent true data or noise, and signal collection, processing and sampling is then adjusted allowing more aggressive decoding techniques to be used. In another aspect, a non-linear edge strength digitizer is employed capable of decoding both poorly printed and high density bar codes. A matched filter for bar code symbol signals is also proposed; as there is no inherent synchronisation in the bar code signals, a peak or edge detector is used to trigger the system. An automatic deblurring signal processor also proposed wherein a first derivative of an input bar code signal is compared against a threshold range and, if no match is found, then parameters of the processor system are varied to increase the likelihood of a comparison being successful.

摘要: A multi-bit digitizer (30) for a barcode reader detects the presence of edges of a scanned barcode symbol, and also measures the strength of each detected edge. A polarity or edge direction signal (8) indicates the direction of each detected edge, and a timing signal (6) is representative of the timing and also, by means of a variable pulse width, the strength of each edge. A gating signal (200) indicates that the data are unreliable and invalid if the measured voltage applied to the scanner motor of the barcode reader is higher or lower than defined limit values. Any scans made at a speed which were too high or too low are rejected.

摘要: To read optically encoded information over a wide range of densities, the present invention provides a spacer system on the tip of an optical reader. The optical reader may be a contact wand type device, for example including a fixed laser emitter. Alternatively, the optical reader may be a moving spot scanner. In either case, the emitter element of the optical reader produces a diverging beam of light. During a reading operation, the spacer contacts the object surface on which optically encoded indicia is formed. The spacer selectively defines at least two different distances between the light emitter, or the focal point of the emitted beam of light, and the object surface. Because of the beam divergence, the diameter of the beam at its point of impact on the object surface will be different for each of the two different distances. The different beam diameters provide the optical reader with different effective sensing spots for reading different density symbols. The present invention also incorporates an optical reader, typically a moving spot laser scanner, into a number of different types of computer data input devices, such as the stylus of a digitizer table and a computer "mouse." In one such integrated terminal embodiment, the optical reader is combined with a touch sensitive display and data input device.
