Measurement values which indicate an operating state are detected using sensors (12a-c) which are provided at measurement points paired with primary components of the energy supply network (11), and a visualization which indicates the operating state of the energy supply network (11) at each measurement point is generated on the basis of the measurement values or values derived therefrom using a monitoring device (14) of the operator of the energy supply network (11). The aim of the invention is to largely minimize the configuration and parameterization complexity for the operator of the energy supply network. This is achieved in that the measurement values or values derived therefrom are first transmitted from the sensors (12a-c) to an application server (13) which is provided outside of the region of influence of the operator of the energy supply network (11); the measurement values or the values derived therefrom are analyzed and/or processed, thereby forming system status values, by means of the application server (13), said system status values indicating the operating state of the energy supply network (11) at the measurement points of each sensor (12a-c); the system status values are transmitted to the monitoring device (14); and a visualization which indicates the operating state of the energy supply network (11) at the measurement point of each sensor (12a-c) is generated by means of the monitoring device (14) using the system status values and displayed.
