The invention relates to a method and a device operating according to said method for measuring flow velocities. A basic calibration is performed independently of the device, by means of which coefficients are determined that represent an influence of variables to which the device is subjected during measurement, for example, properties of the flowing medium and flow velocity. For operating the device, a device-specific operational calibration is performed, wherein a device-specific transmission factor is determined. Thus, during operation of the device, no further calibration, even when changing the medium, is necessary, due to the device-independent coefficients and the device-specific transmission factors being known.
