A beam forming unit for receivers comprising at least two antennas (1,2) is introduced. By evaluating the phases (25,26) of the received signals in each antenna signal path, it is possible to determine the phase offsets (ΔΦ) between the antenna signal paths. At least one of the antenna signal paths comprises phase shifting means for shifting the phases of the received signals according to said phase offsets (ΔΦ). The baseband signals (19, 20) obtained via the various antenna signal paths are now phase coherent and can be added in order to form a combined signal (28), which is forwarded to the demodulation unit (29). The phase estimation means for the various antenna signal paths are preferably realized as shared phase estimation means (21,22) which are operated in a multiplex mode.

A receiver for simulcast signals and a method for receiving a simulcast signal transmitted via a distorted channel is described. By means of a bandpass filter, an initial digital signal is separated from the simulcast signal. This initial digital signal is subtracted from said simulcast signal, and as a result of the subtraction, an intermediate analogue signal is obtained. With respect to the initial digital signal, a channel estimation and equalization is performed. Thus, it is possible to estimate the channel's frequency response, to remove channel impairments due to frequency selective fading and/or to non-symmetric receiver input filter, and to generate a corrected digital signal. Said corrected digital signal, or a signal derived therefrom, is added to said intermediate analogue signal, in order to obtain the simulcast signal's analogue signal part.

A System (1) for processing an analogue intermediate frequency signal with variable frequency comprises sampling means (5) for sampling the analogue intermediate frequency signal on the basis of a variable sampling rate to obtain a digital intermediate frequency signal, and mixing means (6) being connected to the sampling means for frequency shifting of the digital intermediate frequency signal on the basis of a variable shifting rate to obtain a digital baseband sign al, wherein the shifting rate is adjustable so that the digital intermediate frequency signal is shifted into a predetermined frequency range. This allows to process analogue intermediate frequency signals with any frequency, and saving energy at the same time.

A receiver and a method for receiving a digital signal and an analogue signal is described, whereby both signals transmit the same audio program. In dependence of the reception situation, the receiver switches or slides from said digital signal to said analogue signal and back. Each time the receiver switches between the digital signal, which has an audio bandwidth of about 12kHz, and the analogue signal, which has an audio bandwidth of only 4.5kHz, the sound of the received audio output signal abruptly changes from a rich sound to a rather flat sound, or vice versa. To avoid this, the audio bandwidth of the digital signal is gradually reduced when the reception situation worsens. In case of frequent occurrence of switching, or in case of a bad reception of the digital signal, the bandwdth of the digital signal is reduced.
