A lever-operated connector includes a pair of connector housings displaced toward each other to be connected together by rotationally moving a lever form an open position to connected position, a cam follower portion provided on one connector housing, the lever rotatably mounted on the other connector housing, a lever lock portion, and a return spring. The lock portion has a retaining pawl provided on the one connector and a retained portion provided on the lever. The cam portion has a play region for allowing the lever to return a predeterxnined angle from the connected position toward the open position. A surface on which the retained portion is engaged with the retaining pawl is inclined in such a direction as to hamper retraction of the retaining pawl. Furthermore, the lever is automatically brought into a upstanding condition by the return spring.

Female and male housings (21,22) properly connected with each other are separated as follows. A finger is placed on a pushable portion (53) projecting from the upper surface of a slidable member (50) to push the slidable member (50) backward against a biasing force of a coil spring (51). Next, a displacement operating portion (36) provided at the rear end of a locking piece (31) is raised to disengage a locking claw (35) and an engaging portion (55A). When the female housing (21) is pulled out of the male housing (22) in this state, the housings (21,22) are separated. The pushable portion (53) of the slidable member (50) and the displacement operating operation (36) of the locking piece (31) are so formed as not to project out from the outer surfaces of the housings (21,22). Therefore, a deformation and/or damage of the slidable member (50), the locking piece (31) and their neighboring parts by an external force can be prevented.

An electrical connector assembly (1,4) is provided which assumes a fully coupled state even if it was in a semi-coupled state prior to being attached to a support bracket (B). A lever 12 has an inclined coupling surface 26a which draws a semi-coupled female connector housing 4 in the coupling direction, thereby ensuring a fully coupled state. A support bracket (B) cannot be fully inserted until the lever 12 has moved the connectors (1,4) from a semi-coupled to a fully coupled condition. If the connectors are improperly connected a second inclined surface (26c) of the lever (12) decouples the connectors as the support bracket (B) is engaged.
