Beim Anmeldungsgegenstand handelt es sich um ein Verfahren zur Herstellung einer biaxial gestreckten Polyesterflachfolie, bei der die Zugfestigkeiten in Längs- und Querrichtung gegenüber herkömmlichen Folien verbessert sind. Das Verfahren wird derart durchgeführt, daß man eine um jeweils wenigstens das zweifache gestreckte Polyesterfolie in Längs- und Querrichtung nachstreckt, wobei man die Längs- und Quernachstreckung in einem Verhältnis von 1 : 1,05 bis 1 : 2,5 bei einer Temperatur zwischen T g + 10°C (T g = Glasübergangstemperatur des Polyesters) und T m - 40°C (T m = Schmelzpunkt des Polyesters) und eine Nachthermofixierung bei einer Temperatur zwischen T g + 50°C und T m - 10°C durchführt.

Disclosed are a polyethylene terephthalate film having the sum of F-5 values in longitudinal and transverse directions of 3500 to 5000 kg/cm 2 , absolute shrinkages in lon- gltudinal and transverse directions at 100°C of up to 2.5% and an amorphous orientation factor of -1.5 to 0.5, a process for the production of the film and a magnetic recording medium having the film as a base. A polyethylene terephthalate film useful as a magnetic recording medium having super high-tensile strengths in both longitudinal and transverse directions and a low heat shrinkage is provided, while it has been considered that such properties could not be obtained in polyethylene terephthalate films.
