    Abstract: An engine is connected to a transmission. The engine is provided with an exhaust gas recirculation apparatus including an EGR passage through which part of exhaust gas is introduced from an exhaust system to an intake system; an EGR cooler, provided in the EGR passage, which cools exhaust gas; a bypass passage through which exhaust gas is introduced from the exhaust system to the intake system without passing through the EGR cooler; and a bypass valve provided in the bypass passage. In the exhaust gas recirculation apparatus, the amount of exhaust gas flowing through the EGR cooler and the bypass passage is adjusted by changing the opening degree of the bypass valve based on an engine load (steps S110 and S120). If it is determined that the transmission is performing a shift operation, the opening degree of the bypass valve is maintained at an opening degree set immediately before the determination is made (step S 170).
