To provide a seat belt retractor capable of winding up a seat belt at a proper speed according to the amount of wound seat belt. As an occupant releases the latching between a buckle and a tongue, the seat belt retractor winds up the seat belt at a winding-up speed S1 as a first high speed. Accordingly, the seat belt moves away from the occupant immediately. As a time period (T1-T0) elapses from the buckle release, the seat belt retractor winds up the seat belt at a winding-up speed S2 as a low speed. Accordingly, the seat belt is slowly wound up so that the tongue is less likely to strike and thus scratch an interior panel. As a time period (T2-T1) further elapsed, the seat belt retractor winds up the seat belt at a winding-up speed S3 as a second high speed. Accordingly, the winding of the seat belt is promptly completed so that the seat belt is less likely to be caught by a door when the occupant gets off the vehicle (Fig. 1).

To provide a seatbelt retracting method which can retract the entire quantity of a seatbelt even when the seatbelt is unintentionally engaged with something during retraction of the seatbelt. When a time from engagement between a buckle and a tongue of the seatbelt is released and a motor starts retraction until it stops for the first time is equal to or exceeds a first predetermined value, a state in which retraction is stopped is maintained, and when the time from the motor starts retraction until it stops for the first time is smaller than the first predetermined value, the retracting operation is restarted every time when the retracting operation is stopped until a total time of retracting operation carried by the motor reaches or exceeds a second predetermined value (Fig. 1).

To provide a seat belt retractor (1) which is constructed in a compact form and which achieves two winding performances, i.e. winding a belt rapidly and winding the belt with high torque, with reduced power consumption of a motor (6) and by simplified control of the motor (6), the rotation of a motor (6) in the belt winding direction move a clutch gear (31) and a rotary shaft (32) along an arc-shape guide hole (11g). When belt tension is small, the rotary shaft (32) comes in contact with a clutch arm (33) and then the clutch gear (31) and the carrier gear (17) are meshed with each other so as to establish a high-speed and low-torque power transmission passage. When the belt tension is large, the rotary shaft (32) comes in contact with the clutch arm (33) and, after that, the rotary shaft (32) further moves the clutch arm (33) to pivot. A clutch pawl (34) pivots and engages with one of the ratchet teeth (19b) to stop the rotation of an internal gear (19a) so that the clutch gear (31) become out of mesh with the carrier gear (17), thereby establishing a low-speed and high-torque power transmission passage.

A seat belt retractor 1 of a seat belt device 100 to be mounted in a vehicle controls the electric motor so that the operations for increasing and decreasing the tension acting on the seat belt 3 by the spool are repeated several times at the time of fastening of the seat belt, to warn the vehicle occupant C, and the controller controls the electric motor so that a motion of the spool becomes relatively larger in a seat belt retracting direction in the first operation of the operations repeated several times (Fig. 1).

In order to provide effective technology to increase reliability relevant to power transmission releasing operation for a power transmission mechanism, the seatbelt retractor has a configuration for switching the states between a power transmitting state for transmitting a power of an electric motor to a spool via a clutch-type power transmission mechanism and a power transmission released-state in which the power transmitting state is released, by rotating the electric motor. The seatbelt retractor (1) of the seatbelt apparatus mounted on the motor vehicle is configured such that when the power transmission releasing operation is performed, the power transmitting state is judged on the basis of the motor load information of the motor (32) detected by the motor-current detection meter (69), and the power transmission releasing operation is performed on the basis of the judged result.
