The present invention provides a method, apparatus and system for providing one or more encryption keys to a source terminal and one or more end terminals. The present invention allows a non-key generation capable terminal to send and receive encrypted calls. In addition, the present invention increases the security of extended length sessions and compensates for the use of smaller encryption keys by periodically changing the encryption keys. The present invention also allows the bearer paths between terminals to be separately encrypted using different algorithms or no encryption based on limitations imposed by law and the capabilities of the terminals.

Systems and methods for dynamically optimizing the fidelity of a speech signal received from a wireless telephony device and transmitted through a packet-switched network. In an exemplary embodiment, at least one Quality of Speech (QoS) transmission characteristic is determined for a packet-switched network intermediate to the a first Media Gateway (MGW) and a second MGW; the fidelity of speech transmitted through the packet-switched network being a function of the QoS transmission characteristic. A speech codec is dynamically-selected as a function of the QoS transmission characteristic of the packet-switched network. The speech signal is encoded into speech data using the dynamically-selected speech codec, and transmitted through the packet-switched network from the first MGW to the second MGW. The second MGW decodes the speech data using the dynamically-selected speech codec.

In a mobile telecommunications network (10), a subscriber (29) having a primary subscription on a home mobile network (15) registers one or more flexible subscriber numbers on a secondary network (40) that are associated with the primary subscription. A caller (61) places a call to a subscriber (29) through a serving network using the flexible subscriber number. The flexible subscriber number is translated into a primary MSISDN and the call is connected to the subscriber (29) so that roaming charges to the subscriber (29) are minimized.
