摘要: The invention is directed to a center deck assembly (100) for a tire building drum. The tire building drum is rotatably mounted on a central drive shaft and includes a center section (110) . The center deck assembly is disposed in the center section of the drum and includes a hub (112) that seats on and is secured to the central drive shaft. At least one piston (124, 126) extends circumferentially in the tire building drum about the hub and a plurality of segment bars (186) are disposed about the circumference of the center deck assembly. The at least one piston (124, 126) is operably connected to the segment bars by a plurality of linkages (154) , in which each of the linkages (154) includes a scissor-lever mechanism.

摘要: A center mechanism for a tire building drum (102) is disclosed. The tire building drum (102) is rotatably mounted on a central drive shaft (104) and includes a center portion (110). The center mechanism (100) is disposed in the center portion (110) of the drum (102). The center mechanism (100) comprises a hub (112) seating on and being secured to the central drive shaft (104); a single axially-extending piston (120) seating on and extending circumferentially about the hub (112); a cylinder (122) being disposed about the piston (120) and cooperating with the hub (112) and the piston (120) to form a pneumatic chamber (136); a plurality of links (142, 144) being operatively connected to the piston (120); and a plurality of segment bars (154) being disposed about the circumference of the center mechanism (100). Eache one of the segment bars (154) is operatively connected to selected links and seats between a lip (134) of the cylinder (122) and a distal end plate, whereby upon the introduction of compressed air into the pneumatic chamber (136), the piston (120) moves in an axial direction, thereby actuating movement of the links (142, 144) which in turn actuate radial movement of the segment bars (154).

摘要: A second stage tire building drum is disclosed. The drum (100) comprises a first and second hub (120, 120'). Each hub is mounted on a central shaft (110) of the second stage tire building drum (100) and each hub (120, 120') is mounted on an inner sleeve (139). The inner sleeve (139) has an inner surface that is threadedly engaged with an internal screw (114) positioned within the inner sleeve (139) for axial translation; or the inner sleeve (139) is freely axially slidable on the central shaft (110). Each hub (120, 120') has a bead receiving mechanism, wherein said bead receiving mechanism includes one or more bead segments (210), and wherein each bead segment has a pocket (212). Also, a method of forming a tire having a first and second bead on a tire building drum (100) is disclosed. The method comprising the steps of: applying a green tire carcass (610) onto the tire building drum (100), said tire building drum (100) having a left and right hub (120, 120'), said first or left hub (120) having a first bead pocket (212), and said second or right hub (120') having a second bead pocket (212); placing the first and second bead onto a first and second respective bead pocket (212) of the tire building drum (100); and inflating the carcass (610) into engagement with a belt and tread package (650) while (i) moving at least one of the left and right hubs (120, 120') in the axial direction at a controlled velocity towards the other respective hub or (ii) allowing at least one of the first and second bead pockets (212) to freely move in the axial direction.

Also, a method of forming a tire on a tire building drum (100) from a green tire carcass (600) is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of (i) applying a green tire carcass (600) onto the tire building drum (100) by placing a first and second bead onto a first and second respective bead receiving member of the tire building drum, wherein no bead locking force is utilized or (ii) applying a green tire carcass (600) onto the tire building drum (100) by placing a first and second bead onto a first and second respective bead pocket (212) of the tire building drum (100), wherein preferably a relatively low bead locking force is utilized and wherein at least one of the first and second respective bead pockets (212) are configured for unconstrained sliding in the axial direction. The method further comprises the step of inflating the carcass (600) into engagement with a belt and tread package (650) while at least one of the beads is free to move axially inward.
